Family Trek

Most treks out there simply aren’t set up for families but we’ve designed another one for you that is perfect for parents with children aged 8 and above who are active and enjoy the outdoors.

You’ll only be carrying day packs each day, so it is achievable for most levels of fitness. There is also the option of not hiking on one or more of the days – you are welcome to stay at camp or arrange your own activities.

Being with other families is also a great motivator for children to hike and explore. They will love being out in the open air where they can run around to their heart’s content, without screens and technology getting in the way of communication and fun. If you have a child younger that 8 who is super-keen, please contact us to discuss suitability.

Itinerary

Day 1: Perth to Yallingup via Cape Naturaliste (13.5km hike)

We will pick you up from your accommodation in Perth CBD and drive to the beginning of the trail at Cape Naturaliste. We will explore the lighthouse and surrounding area, and begin our hike after lunch. We head past the spectacular Sugarloaf Rock which is a haven for nesting sea birds, and provides a spectacular backdrop to the powerful waves of the Indian Ocean. Continuing onwards towards the famed surf break of Yallingup, we’ll stop for a refreshing dip to wash off the efforts of the day. We will then drive to our incredible campsite in a working permaculture farm where you’ll enjoy a delicious, fresh cooked dinner as you settle into the relaxed pace of our invigorating adventure.

Day 2: Yallingup to Moses Rock (20km hike)

After breakfast we’ll stop in for a one hour guided tour of Ngilgi Cave, an impressive array of limestone formations. Continuing our hike where we left off the previous day, we will then stop off for a dip at the Aquarium and swim with the multitude of fish. Onwards to explore the incredible Canal Rocks, which displays the coastal geology via a series of wooden bridges spanning the rock platforms – it’s a slight detour off the main trail but well worth the effort. It’s a day of impressive features, as this is followed by the Injidup natural spa, where you can cool off again in the serene rockpools. Another optional side trip to the impressive Quininup Falls is possible, or onwards to camp where a delicious hot meal awaits.

Day 3: Moses Rock Camp to Ellensbrook Homestead (19km hike)

After breakfast we will continue our hike through Wilyabrup Brook, where you are likely to get your feet wet crossing this wild bit of coastline. Then to the Wilyabrup sea cliffs with impressive viewpoints as we wend our way along the coastline towards Gracetown. The track then heads inland towards the National Trust listed Ellensbrook Homestead. We’ll then head back to our tranquil campsite, and enjoy a delicious dinner cooked with produce from the Permaculture Garden.

Day 4: Ellensbrook Homestead to Contos Campground (27.5kms)

Yes this is a long day, but worth the effort! The first feature is the beautiful Meekadarabee Falls and Cave, rich in indigenous history. After that, there are two routes which are determined by rainfall and tides – whether it’s possible to cross at Margaret River Mouth or follow the inland route. Either way, you’re in for an adventure. After the coastal town of Prevelly, the trail heads inland before descending to the Boodjidup Brook Crossing. The track then leads along Boodjidup and Redgate beaches before heading up to some more spectacular limestone cliffs with views to Contos Beach.

Day 5: Contos to Hamelin Bay (22km hike)

After an initial grove of Peppermint trees, the trail heads into the towering Karri trees of the Boranup Forest. Some reach up to 60m in height! This stretch is a tranquil contrast to frontline coastal hiking. When you reach the coast again, there is a surprisingly enjoyable 9km beach walk, with no doubt many swims along the way. Following this, the stunning turquoise waters of Hamelin Bay will greet you.

Day 6: Hamelin Bay to Cape Leeuwin (22km hike)

This is our final day on the trail and we’ll continue hiking through this impressively rugged landscape, including a series of limestone Blowholes. There is also the re-emergence of granite cliffs, and as you descend to Deepdene Beach you can make out the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse in the distance. After a beach walk, continuing along rock platforms and cliffs, you will arrive at Australia’s tallest Lighthouse and most south-westerly point after an incredible journey! That evening, we head to one of the Margaret River Region’s best restaurants for a celebratory dinner.

Day 7: Margaret River to Perth

After a delicious cooked breakfast, we’ll get on the road back to Perth. What a special experience you will have had with your family, having spent quality time together in the outdoors. You’ll be feeling energised and invigorated!
