DAY 1 – DARWIN
On Day 1, you’ll arrive in Darwin, the modern, cosmopolitan capital of the Northern Territory. After a group briefing, we’ll begin our adventure with a visit to the famous Mindil Beach Markets and take photos of the sun as it sets over the Timor Sea!
DAY 2 – DARWIN TO DUNLOP CAMP (4-5 HOURS HIKING)
After an early breakfast, we’ll drive to Nitmiluk National Park located 30 minutes past the township of Katherine. After registering at the visitor centre, we head out along the Katherine River, past gum trees filled with Flying Foxes and climb to a vantage point where the views extend along the river in both directions and north across Seventeen Mile Valley. We’ll then trek along the rugged escarpment towards Dunlop camp to set up our base. After setting up our camp, we’ll head down to the beautiful Lily Ponds for some photos and a refreshing swim in this beautiful waterhole. Enjoy a delicious healthy dinner before sleeping out under the most incredible stars! The seasonal dry weather at this time means that we won’t even need a tent.
DAY 3 – DUNLOP CAMP TO SMITT ROCK RETURN (3-4 HOURS HIKING)
As the sun rises, you’ll have the opportunity to photograph the outback in the spectacular morning light. After breakfast, we’ll head back towards the gorges on a rugged trail, past a number of shallow water holes to end up at Smitt Rock, a magnificent rock structure at the 5th Gorge. If we’re lucky we may see some of the Freshwater Crocodiles that live in this area. After a 2-hour photography exploration, we’ll head back to Dunlop camp to learn more about making the most out of using our cameras in the wild.
DAY 4 – DUNLOP CAMP TO EIGHTH GORGE (3-4 HOURS HIKING)
After breakfast, we’ll set off towards the remote Eighth Gorge. The track is easy to start with and then narrows and winds around the head of a small gorge and then descends through hundreds of palms. The gorge walls become taller on both sides as we approach the Eighth Gorge Campsite, beside a large, permanent pool. We’ll then head down to one of the most spectacular swim spots in Australia. We’ll have the afternoon to relax in the sun by the waters edge and to capture this glorious setting on camera. This is another great spot to see Freshwater Crocodiles.
DAY 5 – EIGHTH GORGE TO DARWIN (4-5 HOURS HIKING)
Today is our last day in the Nitmiluk National Park. After an early morning swim, we’ll head back along the track towards the visitor centre. There will be the opportunity on the way back to explore the Jawoyn Valley and to photograph ancient Aboriginal rock art. On the return, with the change of perspective, you’ll appreciate even more of the natural beauty of this unique landscape. After finishing the walk we’ll head back to Darwin and will stop at the famous Edith Falls for one final swim in the wild!
