Overview

Most treks out there simply aren’t set up for families but we’ve designed another one for you that is perfect for parents with children aged 8-16 who are active and who enjoy the outdoors. It combines a mixture of stunning scenery, mostly easy to moderate trekking terrain with enough challenge to give children a real sense of achievement.

Being with other families is also a great motivator for children to hike and explore. They will love being out in the open air in a safe place where they can run around to their hearts content, without screens and technology getting in the way of communication and fun. What could be better for a family adventure!

The trip will be hosted by two qualified Primal Adventures guides with tons of experience hiking with families, and working with children clearances. If you have a child younger that 8 who is super-keen, please contact us to discuss suitability.

Day 1: Hobart to Hazards Beach Camp (3-4 hours hiking)

We head from Hobart to the stunning East Coast of Tasmania. After organising our trekking gear, we’ll hike up between Mount Mayson and Mount Amos for our first glimpse of the white sandy beaches of Wineglass Bay. After a short descent down to the Bay we’ll cut across the peninsula on the Isthmus Track past Hazards Lagoon to Hazards Beach. At the end of this beautiful beach our campsite awaits us, hidden amongst the trees. Tonight you’ll enjoy a beautiful, wholefood dinner as you listen to the sound of the waves lapping on the sand.

Day 2: Hazards Beach to Cooks Corner (2 hours plus optional additional 2-hour walk with day pack)

After breakfast, we’ll head south, through the forests to Cooks Corner, another stunning white beach overlooking Great Oyster Bay. After setting up camp at Cooks Corner we’ll set off on an optional additional walk to Bryans Beach for spectacular views out to Schouten Island and a swim in the crystal clear waters.

Day 3: Cooks Corner to Wineglass Bay (6-7 hours hiking)

After breakfast and an invigorating swim in the ocean, we’ll pack up camp and head inland through the tall stands of Stringybark. The track climbs gradually to the summit of Mount Graham where we’ll enjoy incredible 360 mountain panoramas at one of the best view points in Australia! After a lazy lunch taking in the scenery, we’ll continue north over a heathland plateau and then descend down to an idyllic camp spot at the south end of Wineglass Bay. Soak up the scenery after a great day of walking!

Day 4: Wineglass Bay to Hobart (2-3 hours hiking)

After a leisurely breakfast enjoying the water views, we head off back to Wineglass Bay along the Hazards Beach Track which heads north beside Great Oyster Bay. We’ll then head south towards our drop off point at Hobart Airport. What an adventure you will have shared with your family!

Only away for 3 nights, but felt like we were a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Adored having this time with my 13 yr old son and such a fun group. Helen and Pete looked after us all brilliantly – especially with the chocolate bribes to keep us going mid-hike!

We will be walking with backpacks for around 3 hours on day 1, 2 and 4 and for 6 hours on day 3. The trek is suitable for parents and children aged 8 or above who are active and who enjoy the outdoors. Parents can opt to carry most of the gear for their children. Moderate fitness required (speak to us if you want to know whether this is suitable for you). Some uneven track surfaces.
The trip will be hosted by two qualified Primal Adventures guides with tons of experience hiking with families, and working with children clearances. Primal Adventures is licensed to lead trekking groups in Tasmania. In addition, they are both trained in wilderness first aid and will carry emergency communication systems. They will enjoy talking to you and your family about training and living the way that nature intended on this incredible adventure!
The East Coast of Tasmania is shielded from the prevailing westerly weather by the mountainous interior of the island and high central plateau. The result is a cool temperate and maritime climate that enjoys lots of sunshine! Temperatures do not fluctuate greatly and average rainfall is significantly lower than western and central parts of Tasmania. Weather can always be unpredictable however, and its necessary to prepare for all conditions and to have good-quality warm clothing. Jeans and cotton clothing are not suitable for hiking.

Optional items: Gaiters (recommended if wearing shorts), binoculars, gloves/mittens, earplugs, walking poles, camera.

We supply: tents, inflatable mattresses, cooking equipment, plates/cutlery, first aid kit, safety equipment and maps.

All the meals as indicated above are included in the price. The food is based on nutritious, healthy, wholefood recipes. Please let us know if you have any special dietary requirements. Among the group equipment is a portable stove which we will carry on the trek.
The tour starts and finishes at Hobart Airport. We will pick you up at 8am on Thursday 16th April and drop you off at approximately 6pm on Sunday 19th April 2020.

A deposit of $600 per person is required to secure your place.
Full payment is required 8 weeks before the date of your trek.

Comprehensive personal travel insurance is required for this trip. We will also ask you to fill out a disclaimer before you begin the adventure. You must follow the instructions of your guide at all times.
When you book you must notify us of any medical condition, medical history, or medications that you are on. In particular, asthma, diabetes, heart conditions, allergies to wasp/ bee stings and food allergies.

With any outdoor activity, there is an element of risk. Primal Adventures operates in remote and mountainous areas. Risks in undertaking this activity could include hypothermia due to adverse weather conditions, personal injury, or property damage from hiking over rugged and uneven terrain.
