Itinerary
Day 1 – 10-12 KMS HIKE | EXPLORE DRY CANYONS | MARVEL AT THE VIEW
We will meet at 10am at the base of Donkey Mountain to begin our exploration. On the map it looks like a leisurely 1km ascent up to the plateau at the top. On the ground, it’s a network of wonderful crevasses, slots and fissures to explore. Our expert local guide will lead the way here so we see the best of the mountain, and explain some of the geology and history of this spectacular location. At the top you’ll be hopping between pagodas, walking through canyons, and marvelling at the view of the valleys below.
You’ll enjoy a delicious lunch before heading down a different way to explore more of these incredible weathered geological features. We’ll drive 25 mins to our camp, after which we’ll be on foot for the rest of the weekend. After setting up camp in our private campsite, you’ll be served a delicious hot dinner by the glow of the campfire. Bliss! LD
DAY 2 – 18KM HIKE | SEE GLOW WORMS | EXPLORE HISTORIC RUINS
Today we will hike directly from our campsite further into the Wollemi National Park to explore two iconic features of this landscape – the Glow worm tunnel and the old industrial ruins of Newnes. The trail The trail meanders through tree-fern filled gorges, sandstone pagodas and canyons and mountain streams to the abandoned railway tunnel.
Some have described the Glow worm Tunnel as an ethereal experience, as the bioluminescent glow worms twinkle in this dark and beautiful place. Following this, we hike in a loop to the incredible historic ruins of the former Newnes Shale Oil Refinery. The remains of this once prosperous industry and thriving community are now being reclaimed by nature. Walking amongst this landscape you’ll be able to explore old coke ovens, brick kilns, parrafin sheds and crumbling walls.
After a peaceful hike back to camp, we’ll spend the evening around the campfire. Dinner will be served to you as you relax and enjoy the tranquility. BLD
DAY 3 – 9KMS HIKE | 300M WET CANYON | 6 ABSEILS UP TO 15M
Today is our big and exciting finale! After a delicious breakfast, we’ll pack up camp and head along the Pipeline Track towards Pipeline Canyon. This is one of the most beautiful and exciting canyons in all the Blue Mountains. There is an upper and lower section of the canyon. The upper section is a lovely stroll through a spectacular constriction which towers above, with some nice little caves and overhangs to explore. Our expert guides will ensure we are safe the entire way, as the lower section has some exciting pitches to abseil. There may be a bit of a swim to get through the first part, but you’ll be in a full-length wetsuit so you will stay toasty warm! A few abseil pitches follow, varying in length from 4-15 m long as you descend into this incredible environment. It will involve a lot of fun and exciting abseils in a really pretty environment.
We’ll have lunch at the end, before heading further along the Pipeline Track and back to camp. It’ll be time to say our goodbyes after an unforgettable long weekend of adventure, knowing that your donation will empower a young person to fulfil their potential. BL
