Most treks out there simply aren’t set up for families but we’ve designed one for you that is perfect for the adventurous younger ones. It combines a mixture of stunning scenery, unique historic buildings, mostly easy to moderate trekking terrain with enough challenge to give children a real sense of achievement. We will be based in one camp for the 3 nights, so will only need to carry daypacks on the daily hikes.

Forrester kangaroos, wallabies and wombats wander about freely, and there is abundant birdlife in this World Heritage Listed site. To top it off, we can roast marshmallows on the campfire as we gaze at the stars each evening! The trek is suitable for parents and children aged 8 or above who are active and who enjoy the outdoors. If you have a younger child who is super-keen, please contact us to discuss suitability.

Being with other families is also a great motivator for children to hike and explore. They will love being out in the open air in a safe place where they can run around to their heart’s content, without screens and technology getting in the way of communication and fun. What could be better for a family adventure!

On Day 1, we’ll meet at Hobart Airport and drive approximately 1.5 hours in a private mini-bus to the historic coastal town of Triabunna. We’ll then take a boat across a short passage to land at the World Heritage settlement of Darlington. After a healthy lunch we’ll head south on a walk to explore Maria Island’s famous Painted Cliffs. These patterned limestone cliffs have been carved by the sea and are surrounded by beautiful rock pools. We’ll then head back to camp along the stunning coastline and historic convict buildings. After setting up camp and having a hot shower, it’s time for a delicious healthy meal!

Only away for 3 nights, but felt like we were a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Adored having this time with my 13 yr old son and such a fun group. Helen and Pete looked after us all brilliantly – especially with the chocolate bribes to keep us going mid-hike.

As the sun rises, we’ll be offering an optional fitness session on the beach to kick-start your day! After breakfast, we’ll then set off on a walk on the islands inland track south towards 4-Mile Beach. This pristine, sheltered white beach is the perfect spot for exploration. We will have lunch before we head back to Darlington. On the walk, expect to see an abundance of the island’s spectacular wildlife! In the afternoon, we will take another shorter walk to Cape Boulanger and the Fossil Cliffs. Tonight, camp ovens will be set up to cook you a delicious campfire roast and damper. Yum!.

After a hearty breakfast, we will head up to complete one of Australia’s top 10 day-walks to the summit of Bishop & Clerk. The walk takes us through grasslands, open forest and rare “cloud” rain forests, to the rocky slopes of the summit with incredible views out over the Pacific Ocean towards the Freycinet Peninsula. In the afternoon there will be some guided reflection time with your family, where you will be offered activities to assist in strengthening family bonds. You can choose instead to simply have some quiet time exploring the surrounds with your family. After another delicious meal, we will have a game of ‘spotlight’ to see how much nocturnal wildlife we can see!

On the last morning we’ll be offering another optional fitness session to energise us for the day ahead. We’ll then hike to a tranquil reservoir set in the forest for a relaxing morning in this incredible setting. We then head back to Darlington for lunch before being transferred by boat back to mainland Tasmania. We’ll head back to Hobart Airport for flights home after an amazing family adventure where you will return feeling much more connected to your family, and energized by the beautiful natural environment.

We will be walking with daypacks for 2-6 hours each day. The trek is suitable for parents and children aged 8 or above who are active and enjoy the outdoors. Moderate fitness required (speak to us if you want to know whether this is suitable for you). Some uneven track surfaces.
You will be guided by Helen Cooper and Amanda Morrison, who are experienced and qualified bushwalking guides licensed to lead trekking groups in Tasmania. In addition, they are both trained in wilderness first aid and will carry a satellite phone. They will enjoy talking to you and your family about keeping fit and living the way that nature intended on this incredible adventure!

The East Coast of Tasmania is shielded from the prevailing westerly weather by the mountainous interior of the island and high central plateau. The result is a cool temperate and maritime climate that enjoys lots of sunshine! Temperatures do not fluctuate greatly and average rainfall is significantly lower than western and central parts of Tasmania. Weather can always be unpredictable however and its necessary to prepare for all conditions and to have good-quality warm clothing. Jeans and cotton clothing are not suitable for the trip.
