Details

This 4-day Kosciuszko Snowshoe Adventure is designed to give you:

  • an incredible journey in a unique and dazzling natural Australian landscape
  • a restful break from technology and the stresses of everyday life
  • a powerful fitness goal to inspire and motivate you towards better health
DAY 1 – JINDABYNE VIA GUTHEGA TO WHITES RIVER HUT (3-4 HOURS WALKING)

We will meet at 10am in Jindabyne for fitting of specialist equipment, then be driven up to 1600m elevation at Guthega. We will begin our exciting snowshoeing adventure after a delicious lunch. We’ll cross the Snowy River and head up the Schlink Track to our camp at Whites River Hut. We set up our first snow camp here in the vicinity of the hut – if you’ve not snow camped before it can be surprisingly comfortable and loads of fun.

DAY 2 – EXPLORE THE ROLLING GROUNDS & GRANITE PEAKS (4-6 HOURS WALKING)

Today there’s no need to pack up camp, as we’ll do some exploring of the local backcountry.  We’ll head up the spur that leads to the Rolling Grounds – an elevated plateau of granite and ice that lies between the Main Range and the Jagungal Wilderness. We’ll do a loop back to our camp near Whites River Hut for our second night on the snow.

DAY 3 – WHITES RIVER HUT TO DISAPPOINTMENT SPUR (4-6 HOURS WALKING)

With good weather and group fitness we will pack up camp and head up towards Disappointment Spur. If the weather is less favourable, we will develop our snow safety skills including avalanche awareness and snow shelter construction. We will camp near the hut at Disappointment Spur, but will surely not be disappointed by the scenery!

DAY 4 – DISAPPOINTMENT SPUR VIA GUTHEGA TO JINDABYNE (2-3 HOURS WALKING)

The final day’s walk heads back down towards the Snowy River, with views up to the mountains we have just traversed. We’ll have some lunch in Guthega, after which we’ll retrace our drive back into Jindabyne. You will return feeling refreshed, revitalised and on top of the world!

You will be guided by Terry Mattingley & Helen Cooper. Terry has spent many years traversing the backcountry in this area, and is extremely knowledgable about snow conditions and safety. Both are trained in Outdoor Recreation & Wilderness First Aid. The group will have a satellite phone, Garmin InReach device, EPIRB and first aid kits.
We will be hiking for 4-6 hours each day. On up to three of the days you will be carrying an 14-18kg pack – it decreases in weight as we eat all the food.  Moderate fitness levels required (speak to us if you want to know whether this is suitable for you). Some steep slopes.

It is necessary to prepare for all conditions and to have good-quality outdoor clothing. Jeans and cotton clothing are a danger to us in the alpine environment.
