Itinerary
DAY 1 – QUEENSTOWN
On Day 1, you’ll arrive in Queenstown, the adventure capital of New Zealand. We’ll be staying at the Heritage Hotel (4-star) that sits near the shores of Lake Wakatipu, set against the dramatic Southern Alps. After a trek briefing, join us for an optional group meal or feel free to explore and soak up the atmosphere of this beautiful town!
DAY 2 – GREENSTONE RIVER TO GREENSTONE HUT (4-5 HOURS HIKING)
After an early breakfast, we’ll drive via Glenorchy to the start of the Greenstone Track, around 86km from Queenstown. We’ll head upstream and cross the Caples river on a swing bridge and the valley then narrows. We’ll pass two high waterfalls and then Slip Creek Hut, an old character hut that lies just before a footbridge. We’ll then continue up the valley on a wide track to Greenstone Hut. The hut was built in 2003, has a wood burner and is situated in a sunny clearing with excellent views both up- and down-valley. After settling in to the hut, enjoy a delicious healthy dinner! BLD
DAY 3 – GREENSTONE HUT TO MCKELLAR HUT (5-7 HOURS HIKING)
After an early breakfast, we’ll start the day with an easy 90-minute stretch up the Greenstone River. We’ll then pass Mid-Greenstone Hut and soon afterwards cross Steele Creek on a swing bridge. The track then stays mostly in the forest but often slides on the edge of some large tussock flats. This section of the trail is a delight, with great views of the Livingstone Mountains and the sparkling waters of the Greenstone. We’ll then reach McKellar Hut, which occupies a clearing with views of the craggy Jean Batten Peak (1971 metres). Explore the delightful area around the hut and then enjoy a delicious healthy dinner by the wood burner! BLD
DAY 4 – MCKELLAR HUT TO QUEENSTOWN (3-4 HOURS HIKING)
Today is our last day on the trail. After an early breakfast, we’ll head past two gorgeous, beech-fringed lakes – Lake McKellar and Lake Howden. We’ll then join the end of the famous Routeburn track and head past Key Summit, down to the Divide to meet our private transport back to Queenstown. Enjoy the stunning scenery as we drive back via Lake Te Anau. Tonight you can either fly back home or enjoy an optional group meal to celebrate the trip! B
