Itinerary
Day 1: Hobart to Lake Vera Hut (5-6 hours hiking)
We’ll pick you up from Hobart or meet the morning flight in, and drive 2 1/2 hours to the start of our trek to begin our adventure. We’ll hike through stunning beech forests and button grass plains up towards Lake Vera Hut. Depending on track conditions and journey times we will either stay at Lake Vera Hut tonight or camp in the National Park.
Day 2: Lake Vera Hut to Lake Tahune Hut (6-8 hours hiking)
On the morning of Day 2, we’ll begin the day walking along the shores of Lake Vera. We will then head up a beautiful steep rainforest shrouded gully glinting with Mica – when you reach the saddle at Barron Pass you will have an incredible view down the massive glacial valley. From Barron Pass we will traverse through open buttongrass plains to Lake Tahune Hut. Depending on weather conditions, we’ll then either hike to Frenchman’s Cap summit that afternoon or for sunrise the next day. The track to the Summit takes just over an hour from the hut, and from there the view includes the West Coast beaches, Lake Burbury and Tasmania’s tallest peak, Mount Ossa. There is some rock scrambling to get up to the summit, so it is not for the fainthearted!
Day 3: Lake Tahune Hut to Lake Vera (6 hours hiking)
On Day 3 we’ll head to the summit if we haven’t already, then hike back through the ancient forest to Lake Vera Hut and enjoy a swim in this beautiful fresh water lake!
Day 4: Lake Tahune Hut to Highway (5-6 hours hiking)
On Day 4 we’ll hike back through the Button Grass plains and exit back to the Highway to return to Hobart. Depending on weather conditions, we should have time to visit Lake St Clair (part of Cradle Mountain National Park) and / or the Wall in the Wilderness on the way back to Hobart. We’ll arrive in Hobart at approximately 4pm.
