FAMILY TREK

Most treks out there simply aren’t set up for families but we’ve designed one for you that is perfect for parents with children aged 8-16 who are active and who enjoy the outdoors. It combines a mixture of stunning scenery, mostly easy to moderate trekking terrain with enough challenge to give children a real sense of achievement. We will be staying at the same campsite each night and transported to the next leg of the journey, so we will only have to carry day packs each day on the trek.

Being with other families is also a great motivator for children to hike and explore. They will love being out in the open air in a safe place where they can run around to their hearts content, without screens and technology getting in the way of communication and fun. What could be better for a family adventure!

The trip will be led by two experienced, qualified trekking guides who have a Working with Children clearance. If you have a child younger that 8 who is super-keen, please contact us to discuss suitability.

Day 1: Kingscote Airport to Cape du Couedic (4-6 hours hiking)

We will pick you up from your morning flight to Kingscote Airport on Kangaroo Island and transport you by private vehicle to Snake Lagoon. You’ll have a delicious lunch before heading out for an afternoon exploring some of the spectacular parts of the south-western tip of Flinders Chase National Park. In the afternoon we’ll hike to the spectacular rock formation at Admirals Arch, see the beautiful Cape du Couedic Lighthouse, and visit historic Weirs Cove. These are some of the truly unique places on Kangaroo Island that we will get to see up close. You will arrive back at camp in time for a delicious dinner under the stars. LD

Day 2: Cape du Couedic to Sanderson Bay (6-7 hours hiking)

Heading out from camp after breakfast, we will continue from where we left off the previous day. It’s a delightful hike along the clifftop amongst coastal mallee, before the incredible sight of the truly Remarkable Rocks. It’s difficult to describe how spectacular these rock formations that we see along the way. They are huge and impressive! After some impressive views from the expansive cliffs, we will stop for a dip at the secluded beach. Another blissful night under the stars awaits. BLD

Day 3: Sanderson Bay to Hanson Bay (5-6 hours hiking)

After another invigorating dip before breakfast, we’ll pack up camp and head along the wild coastline with towering cliffs and expansive views. After a tasty lunch at the spectacular Cape Younghusband, the track heads inland towards Hanson Bay. We will see a change in vegetation here from low coastal heath to tall, dense mallee and tea tree. When we reach the South West River we’ll have the opportunity to use a punt to cross the river; a unique experience not to be missed! We can then head down to the bay for another afternoon splash in the crystal clear water before heading to camp. Get up close to the abundant wildlife here after a great day of walking! BLD

Day 4: Hanson Bay to Kelly Hill Caves (2-3 hours hiking)

After breakfast, we’ll hike through a diversity of habitats; from recovering woodlands to freshwater lakes and ‘karst’ cave systems. Reaching the stunning Wilderness and Grassdale Lagoons, birdwatchers will be rewarded with sightings of abundant birdlife in this stunning habitat. Beautiful sugar gum woodland brings the trail to its conclusion at the amazing Kelly Hill Caves. We will then be transported to Kingscote Airport for your return flights. You do have the option of continuing your stay on the island, and we can drop you at your accommodation. What an adventure you will have shared with your family! BL

We will be walking with daypacks each day. The trek is suitable for parents and children aged 8 or above who are active and who enjoy the outdoors. Moderate fitness required (speak to us if you want to know whether this is suitable for you). Some uneven track surfaces.
